The doctor diagnosed me on Friday, I am overweight, hair on nipples and face, missed periods. I was given Medroxyprogesterone acetate 10mg for 10 days and then was told to follow that after my period with birth control pills and to LOSE WEIGHT ASAP.  I am 29 and never had children but I do want one atleast one day. Is this helpless for me. Oh god I hope not. Do women still get pregnant with this problem? Is there even a cure. My doctor seemed to rush me out of the office and just told me if I lose weight that the hair growth may go away and my periods may return back to normal.

Thanks for listening.

Welcome to the board! The good news is, YES! It is very possible to get pg with PCOS. While there is not cure, treating the core issue of IR, insulin resistance, is the key. The bad news is that it sounds like your doc doesn't have a clue how to do this! While BCP may get you regular and help with some of the symptoms, it will not treat the issue and is reality we have double the risks while on them. And yea, while losing weight might help with some of the symptoms and maybe even the IR, it can be very difficult for us to do. A doc saying lose weight asap and sending you out the door really makes me angry! So, first off, I recommend finding another doc. One that is knowledgeable about PCOS and can help. Below are some links about the way we should eat. This is a part of treatment. Eating right, exercise and usually a insulin sensitizing med will treat the core issue and in turn help with all symptoms, risks and will help you to get pg when you are ready! Hang in there! I am happy to help in any way that I can. Let me know what I can do. Take care, Laura

Thank you. They tested my blood, good, no diabetes, hormone levels are good, no thyroid either. Losing weight is not hard for me, I just have a little problem with comfort food, so could it actually be that if I get on a strict diet that this will help tremendously? The way my health care works (veterans healthcare) I basically have no choice but to go to the same doctor. This is frustrating. Thank you for responding. Since I do not have a problem losing weight and all blood work was good then I should not have to take insulin meds should I?

Thanks in advance for reading and responding.

Howdy! Oh, I certainly understand about veterans healthcare. It can be tough. Often they just don't know enough about PCOS it help. Actually a common thing with all docs. :-( I am glad that you are easily able to lose weight. That is rare with us. However, something to keep in mind is that weight gain is only a symptom. Losing weight, while it can help with the PCOS, does not treat it. It is all about what you are eating. How we need to eat is not the typical low fat/high carb way. Losing weight is great, but if you are still eating the wrong things, it still contributes to the IR, insulin resistance. I am glad that you are not diabetic, but if you don't do things to treat it the chances are high that you will be at some point. Now, if you do eat right and have regular exercise, it is possible to be able to stay away from insulin meds. The best way to know if it is working is getting rid of or lessening of your PCOS symptoms. Also, eating right will help when you are ready to have a child and it will lower the serious risks involved with PCOS. As far as the blood work goes, well, I have perfect blood work until after I had Tobin. It is very common for us to have normal blood work. We can be normal, but maybe ratios are off. Also, with hormones, they fluctuate and maybe when the tests were done everything was fine, but then messed up later. Blood work can diagnose PCOS, but it is not necessary. PCOS is confusing. What I would do is read the links I gave you. Let me know if you have any questions. Post what you eat in a day and I can check it out for you. Take care and ++++++thoughts! Laura
