A friend of mine has been doing the hcg hormone diet and has been losing a lot of weight in a short period of time and I am really considering doing this diet also. I was diagnosed with PCOS about 3 years ago but have been dealing with it sense 8th grade.  I cannot seem to lose weight , no matter how well I eat or how much excersize I do.

I have read nothing but great results from this diet, but I was wondering if anyone here knows how well this hcg thing will be with PCOS, or any info at all if anyone has it.

thanks!

Howdy!  Boy do I understand your struggles!  However, my opinion is that I would never recommend something like this.  Here are some assorted reasons why.

First off, the calorie count is way too low.  For us, it is not about how much we are eating, but what we are eating.  This low of a calorie count may help us to lose weight in the beginning, but more than likely if not right away, eventually, our bodies will go into a kind of starvation mode and actually start turning everything into fat.

Rapid weight loss can also be a dangerous thing.  It is very hard on our heart and other organs and cause heart attack and stroke.  Generally you want to lose about 1-2 pounds a week, not a day.  http://www.ehow.com/about_5158643_problems-rapid-weight-loss.html

The other issue is that you are using something to help you lose weight.  While it may work while you are on it, once you stop chances are you will go back to where you were or even more than likely gain even more.

A big one for us is that it is a hormone.  Throwing more hormones into a already wacked out body just dosen't seem right.  Also, HCG actually feeds testosterone which is definetly something that we don't want to do.

The biggest thing is that really, while weight loss is great and good and important, the extra weight is really only a symptom and not the condition.  Only about half of us are over weight.  For us it is not about how much we are eating, but what we are eating.  We can lose weight on a low fat, low calorie diet, but that will not help, only hurt, the IR further.  With IR, if you do not eat enough or the right things your insulin will have to continue to produce which in the  long run worsens the IR and raises that chances that our pancreus will wear out and we will get diabeties.

I am sorry, I have forgotten, what are you doing to treat the PCOS?  What kind of eating have you done?  Exercise?  For me, I never lost weight and kept it off until I treat the IR with Metformin.  Also, after having my daughter, it too a while to start to lose weight again even on the Met.  It takes about a year for a "normal" womans body to recover after having a child.  It can take longer fur us.  I would be happy to check out a days eating for you.  Unfortunately, there is not one way of eating that it right for us. It can take a while to figure it out, but I would be happy to help!  Take care and let me know what you decide.  Laura
