I am new here. I am in my 40's and have arthritis in my knees but I have a question about my finger joints. Sometimes for no apparent reason one of my finger joints will become extemely extremely painful to the touch. This only lasts for a day or two. Then it is fine. Do you think this is the beginning of RA? Or what? It's very confusing.
thanks
allie

Hi Allie.  I'm glad you found us.  It would be difficult from what you've described to tell whether you're in the beginning stages of RA or not.  Can you tell me which finger joint becomes painful?  RA most usually affects the finger joints nearest to your knuckles, while osteoarthritis (OA) normally affects the joints nearest to the tip of your fingers.  Additionally, RA usually is symmetrical, meaning that both sides of your body would show symptoms.  Is the arthritis in your knees OA?  If so, I might suspect that your finger joint pain is OA as well, but only a doctor can tell for sure.

Here are some typical symptoms of RA:

  • morning stiffness that lasts longer than one hour for at least six weeks
  • three or more joints that are inflamed for at least six weeks
  • presence of arthritis in the hand, wrist, or finger joints for at least six weeks
  • blood tests that reveal rheumatoid factor
  • x-rays that show characteristic changes in the joints
  • fatigue and/or flu-like feeling
  • If you feel like you might have the beginnings of RA, I would consult with your doctor and see if he will refer you to a rheumatologist.  I hope you'll let us know what you find out and please feel free to ask more questions.  We will try our best to help.  :)

    Welcome Allie!
I am not sure if your finger pain is the start of RA. Usually RA effects both sides of the body. If one finger is doing it, one on the other hand is too. RA is very symmetrical. Do you have any other side effects? They include morning stiffness, swelling, redness, tenderness, fatigue, low grade fever, and feeling like you have the flu.

I hope that this was a one time incident, and you have no other problems in the future. Feel free to hang around so we can get to know you better.

    Take good care.

I guess it is symmetrical because it has happened on both hands. It is usually the knuckle joint in the middle. It has happened probably every few months for a couple years now.

    Hi!
I would see your primary care doctor and have some tests run. It could be RA, or it could be something else.
Are your hands the only joints affected?
Any other questions or if you need to vent are welcomed here.
    Hang in there.
