Bypassing the Legislature altogether, Republican Gov. Rick Perry issued an order Friday making Texas the first state to require that schoolgirls get vaccinated against the sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer.

I think the hpv vaccine is another medical miracle. I am in my 30's now and was diagnosed with hpv when I was in my late 20's after receiving a series of "bad" paps. I was really shocked at the news! At the time of my diagnosis I'd had only 3 sexual partners. Hpv can happen to any woman or girl. I thought that I was safe because I've had few partners and was always in monogomous relationships. Because of hpv I had to have cryosurgery for my cervix almost 10 years ago now. For a couple years after I had to have paps every 6 months. I've been healthy since my cryosurgery but I am vigilant about my yearly pap and I feel like hpv has caused me to always have to look over my shoulder for cancer. I wish that the vaccine was available to me before I was sexually active! It would have perhaps saved me from worry, discomfort, and inconvenience. I applaud what the state of Texas is doing.

I think the governor has stepped out of bounds. This decision should be up to the parents of the girls. One of the things I was told was that this precursor to cancer could be started by having sex at an earlier age. Some girls are gonna think that by getting this shot that they will somehow be "safe". The governor needs to step back and worry about other things than sticking his nose in people's private lives.

WTG Texas!!! Now if we can get the other 49 states to step in and make it available. I am for the shot 100%. Just dont know if all parents are going to be happy about it or not.No matter what girls are going to be sexualy active no matter what parents say about it. If I had girls I think I would rather protect them from this disease than to ignore it.
