discussion title: Asthma and prednislone
help me. My son is 2 1/2 and is having a asthma flare up, after a bout w/bronchiotis that my doctor feels was brought on by h1n1. Anyways he has responded well to prednislone before but now I've heard some things that are scary about it, he is one a low dose short term program but I'm terrified of it now,, but the hacking he is having is scary too. Has anyone else used it and have good reports? please help me feel better and confident in this treatment.

I've taken it probably about 100 different times myself over the last 42 years and haven't had any problems so far. Taking it over a short period of time to help get over a flareup won't normally cause any bad side effects; it's when people take it every day or every other day for years at a time that sometimes cause the nasty side effects. With short term side effects, you might notice him being hungrier than usual and maybe a little weight gain and mood swings. If his asthma couldn't be controlled at home, then he would probably end up in the hospital with the other form of it, which is IV solumedrol, at a much higher dose. I've been there and done that all throughout my childhood too because we didn't have the good asthma meds back in the day. The goal is to keep the airways open and your child breathing well. Chronic inflammation caused by uncontrolled asthma can lead to loss of lung function later in life. I'm at about 62% now, but still functioning normally BTW. When a child has allergies and asthma, the ultimate goal is to reduce the amount of allergen exposure in the home to help reduce asthma symptoms, but when one gets sick with a cold or the flu, it's almost inevitable for that child to end up on something like prednisone because viruses really hit an asthmatic's lungs hard. Hope I was able to help a little bit. If you are concerned about the side effects, you should call your doctor to talk it over with him/her too. Does he have an allergist? If not, I would definitely recommend one. Hope he is feeling better soon. HUGS
