Hi calley,
Thank you for asking. I think I am getting my cancer and condition boards mixed up lol.
I posted the answer on the conditions board but here it is for you. I hope you have some feedback of some kind for me.
Okay, here goes...
Well, my scan came back with a prominant cold nodule on the left side and little to no function on the left side,
The right side of my thyroid has multiple hot nodules and is functioning very high, I also have a "gulp" goider.
The doctor said that it is unusual to have a thyroid funtioning high on one side and very low on the other side.
They tried my biopsy 9 times and could not get any cells out. He was supposed to be sticking the needle in the X that the other doctor made to mark the spot. He is not sure but believes it is deeper or he is missing it.
I have to go back on Sept. 13th to try the biopsy again with an ultra sound. We had to stop trying because of swelling.
They wanted to try it this way because it was faster than waiting for an apointment with the ultrasound.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this, or have a high and low side of the thyroid.
The odd thing is that my blood tests kept coming out normal. So, my doctor decided to do the uptake and scan to see what is going on because I have a large lump which we found from the scan is not even the cold nodule it is the bridge like thing going between each side of the thyroid. We could not get any cells out of 9 tries.
I also have an enlarged lymph node in my neck.
Any feedback of any kind would be so much appreciated. Oh and my uptake numbers were normal. And I have a hot spot on the left side top above the cold nodule. The cold nodule is 2cm by 2cm in size and that side of my thyroid is not functioning hardly at all.
TIA,
Hugs,
Laurie

Hi Laurie,

Wow, you must have a lot of needle holes in your neck after that appointment.  Your situation sounds rather complicated.  It's almost as if the cold nodule has slowed the one side down and the hot nodules have sped the other side up.  I would agree that this is unusual.  As I'm guessing you're aware, cold nodules tend to be suspicious - possible cancer.  Hopefully, you can get a decent biopsy to get more information.

It is kind of strange but often the blood tests do come back in the normal range so other things like symptoms do need to be taken into consideration.  I know my sister's last test (a few years ago) was "normal" but all her symptoms indicate hypothyroidism.  I keep telling her that no one can be as cold as she is and not be hypo.

You're in the waiting period and I hope your doctors can get some answers so you can proceed with some treatment.  Thanks for getting back with the update and I think it's good you're posting on both boards.  That way you can get input from more members.

Thank you calley. I sure will be happy to move on to the treatment phase.
(I just realized I need to sign out and in again, sorry.)
Hugs,
Laurie

Laurie, I have not experienced a high and low side of my thyroid when I had it, to my knowledge anyway as that has not been mentioned to me--I do know that my left side was not working at all due to the "cold" nodule (which they didn't know it was cold at the time), and my right side was working double time. They couldn't figure out if my nodule was cold or not, but if they know it's "cold", I am pretty sure they are going to present you with the information that you will undoubtedly need surgery to get it out as cold is not good news. Usually the fnb is a good test, and I can't see why they couldn't get what they wanted unless it is a lot deeper than where they can reach. The US is a good test also--an easy test to go through too. I'm sorry that you have to wait so long for this--I know they whipped me around so fast because they couldn't get any answers from test to test, and seeing as they couldn't figure out why I had a nodule and they weren't sure of anything, then the surgery and that was the proof positive right there when the pathology report came in a week later that I had ca.

If they know you have a cold nodule, don't be frightened, but I think you will be in for the removal of either the left side or possibly a TT. I wish you luck. Hugs. Bea
