I'm sorry you have had such a rough time with it.  That's what I fear for my daugher. Kids can be cruel. At this age, no one notices or says anything. But, once she gets older, they may.

I do notice in all her pics, she turns her head so her left eye is closest to the camera. You can probably see it in my siggy. But, it looks like she's posing and is cute most of the time.  I will definitely keep that in mind as she gets older though.

Again, I'm sorry you had to deal with mean and cruel people. HUGS!

Goodness, Elena is adorable.  I think a lot of how others will treat her depends on how she responds to her own condition.  If she thinks it's no big deal, others can't hurt her.  She is a beautiful child and her smile is disarming.  Keep her self-esteem up and she will do well in the face of the meanies.

Hello, my son was diagnosed with DS today. He is 6 months old and has a head tilt. His left eye doesn't move laterally toward his ear, so we've noticed he just turns his head left to look left. I'm very concerned he will look "different". The doctor said they may do surgery but not until 1-2 years old. My wife isn't even home from the doctor's yet. Has anyone had the surgery? did it correct the eyes cosmetically? My understanding is that it is a defect around 8 weeks of birth with a small part of the brain stem that controls eye movement. Did we do something wrong during pregnancy? Any thing anyone has to offer would be amazing right now. Thanks.

No. You did nothing wrong during pregnancy. Please believe that. These things happen, and they are quite common occurances. All that means is that during that certian time during development that area didnt develop as expected. Not that you did anything to cause it.

My YDD had this issue, her eye does not move so she is missing her upper gaze. It mean sthat she turns her head to keep everything inher line if vision.

This has caused some torticollis, which is common, and should be seen by a PT if your notice his head tilted to one side.

As for the looking different, I know the thought is scary. But your child will adapt and not feel self conscious if you model that for him. Kids have teased my YDD for using a White cane. Yes she gets upset about it. But its short lived. And she knows that she is loved and she is perfect just the way she is.

The surgery I know nothign about, so hopefully someone can help you with that aspect of your concern.

Good luck.

Jenna and Michael, lucky to have Adam, Mady, Aidin and Bryn.
