Got a question or concern about H1N1, aka Swine Flu? Wondering if you should get the vaccine? What to do if you've got a medical condition? What'll happen to our ER departments in case of a new outbreak? Tanya Benenson, MD, medical director for NBC Universal, will be answering questions from iVillagers in an upcoming video. Please post your most pressing concerns and we'll relay them to her. In the meantime, read her advice in this Insider's Guide to Swine Flu.

Hi Amy,

I am very concerned about the H1N1 vaccine.  Being a transplant patient, I take immunosuppressants.  My immune system is kept in a state of compromise.  I am not healthy enough to be able to make it thru that flu. I guess my question is this.  What should I do?  Is the vaccine safe for someone with a compromised immune system or would I be safer to just not take it and try to stay out of crowds?

I'm fairly concerned about H1N1.  I have two young children in elementary school and it seems like are always picking up viruses from school. Having several family members with asthma makes me particularly concerned.

I'm wondering- is there reason to be more concerned about H1N1 than seasonal flu?

Hi,

I'm very concerned with H1N1. I have a 2 year old and she has gotten the regular flu shot and has been fine. I'm wondering how safe this H1N1 vaccine will be. Are the risks the same? What about long term effects, I'm assuming since it's a new vaccine the effects will not be known and that worries me. Is it necessary to give my 2 year old this vaccine?

I have lots of questions about this! As a matter of fact, my DH and I just had a "discussion" about this last night.

  • Why is swine flu more dangerous than seasonal flu? Or is it?
  • What is the difference between influenza and a cold? And why should I be more concerned with the flu?
  • Will there be a mercury-free version of the vaccine?
  • Will public school children be FORCED to be immunized? Will private school children?
  • Is H1N1 really more prevalent than other flu strains or is technology just allowing us to track it more effectively? In other words, are we going to have to deal with a new "pandemic" every year just because we can name specific strains instead of just calling it the flu?
  • I read that flu vaccines actually reduce children's immune response and make them more likely to end up in the hospital, especially those who are most at risk like asthma sufferers. Why would I want to risk that when most people get over the flu with no complications?

I guess that's good for a start! ;)
