Is my weight gain normal?

I'm 24 years old and within the past year and a half I have gained about 30 lbs without any changes to my diet or exercise level. I am on the birth control shot but I have been on that for 6 years now and I don't see why that would affect my weight now. Also I do have thyroid problems but I take my medication regularly and my doctor regulates it as needed. I'm under lots of stress but again that is nothing new. I've tried eating better, drinking more water, etc. But my weight seems to stay the same. Is this just part of getting older? I feel like I'm still to young for my metabolism to slow down this drastically. I've even gotten the point where I have an ugly varacose vein appear on my leg! Does this sound normal or is this something that perhaps I should be worried about?

I'd say that if your not taking any additional/different medications, your eating and exercise habits have not changed, and your thyroid condition is under control, then it's probably time to talk to your doctor to make sure that there isn't something else going that could cause your weight gain.

Greetings! I would agree that you should visit your doctor to talk about the weight gain.

It would probably be wise to check your thyroid levels again at that time, and be sure to request the actual numbers and not a simple explanation that they are "in the normal range." The thyroid behaves differently in each individual, and some people have hypothyroid symptoms -- including unexplained weight gain -- even when their TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) level is within the normal range. You need to reach a level that is right for you. The Thyroid Conditions board on iVillage is a good source of information and advice.

Best of  luck as you work through this.
