How do women's top health concerns match up with women's top health threats? Are the things we worry about most actually the biggest threats to our health statistically? Perhaps not.

According to the Mayo Clinic, women's top 10 health threats are heart disease, cancer, stroke, COPD, Alzheimer's disease, injuries, Type 2 diabetes, flu, kidney disease and blood poisoning (septicemia or sepsis). But the conditions women ask about most on About.com are gallbladder disease, pregnancy symptoms, colposcopy, menstruation, ovarian cysts, women's health symptoms, abnormal uterine bleeding, menopause and perimenopause, urinary tract infections and vaginal health.

• How do these lists mesh with what you thought the top women's health threats and health concerns would be?
• What, if anything, surprises you about these lists?
• What are your top health concerns?

Mine are my RA, Psoriasis, Asthma, and I think we need more education about Heart Health for Women and Girls...
I am a non-smoker and it seems the focus is on women or girls (young women who smoke) but you can be a non-smoker at risk for heart attack or stroke. There are other risk factors.
I kept telling my doctor I felt he should check my blood pressure. Now I am on both medication for cholesterol and blood pressure and am on a low-dose aspirin one a day.
He said the last time I was there he had better check it but was being sarcastic. Don't care it's my health and my LIFE on the line. How many times in the past I have felt like I was wasting his time. Not any more.
My beloved mom died of a heart attack and when I ended up in the same hospital the staff there were excellent because I was scared.
They were amazing, simply amazing and I will be forever grateful for their kindness and concern and the care they gave me was absolutely wonderful.
It's been over a year and it has changed my life...

Hello, and if I neglected to say it earlier, welcome to the Women's Health Issues board, Night Angel!

What surprised me in these lists is that neither included thyroid problems. My doctor told me that hypothyroidism -- underactive thyroid -- is the most common health problem she sees among her female patients. However, that could be because she is proactive about checking for it. Many doctors are not, and it can go undetected for years, causing all sorts of other health problems as it progresses.

My mom had a problem with her thyroid and I remember her having it take six years or more I think for a diagnosis finally to be made.
She had to have radiation (cobalt treatments) and was under quarantine.
Because of my pregnancy I couldn't be around her for a time...that was very hard.
I did ask my doctors to check my thyroid because of my beloved mom's history and they actually did check...amazing.
Thanks again for the WELCOME it is much appreciated. :)

Hi, Night Angel! Since you list asthma as one of your top health concerns, I thought you might be interested in this thread about Asthma in Women.
