the way from now I  have to work. Just today all the company move to their new office building. The building is pretty and so does all the offices. For some coworkers, this new office building is very close to home for the majority now it is very far away (even if people have cars and much worse for those who has not cars)  from the previous we had last week.

In my previous office place. The company main front desk (reception) was close to everything the office had, the kitchen, the copier room, the bathroom, so I had no trouble going to those places. In this new office all those places are so far away from me now, that now we dont have our own restrooms, we have to share the restooms with another company outside the lobby from the same floor. So if I want to go tothe bathroom I have to go out from my desk to the lobby to go o the restroom and so does all the people at work.

Also my direct supervisor ( the Operations Manager and GM) wants me to stay at the front desk the whole time, I mean now the main door dont have lock like the old office building, where people cannot come in unless I open them the door with a magnet. Now we dont have a magnet in the main door, so I cant leave the frotn desk unattended beccause any visitor can come in and can go easily to the office so i  have to  be careful.

What I dislike is that I heard that my desk is going to be moved to the lobby, that is the plan. So if that happens everything now will be ever farther  than already is, the kitchen, the copier room, the meeting rooms, the office supplies cabinet and Im supposed to be in charge of the office supplies cabinet. And the OP and the GM, pretend i cant leave the reception for anything. I mean now i cant print or make copies because I have to walk all the way where those equipment are beause I cant leave my desk unatttended. What if i have to print something, they pretend i call a coworker to cover my space, just for those minutes im gone, hello??  Whne i go thte bathroom also the same thing, Im supposed to be the GM assistant, but now if the manager wants me to go to his office I have to again call someone from work, even if it just seconds to take care fo the front desk while Im not there. I mean each time i get up and go inside the company for anything I have to do, I have to ask for help for coworkers even if their desk are far from me, that is so stupid!!

One of my duties also is to greet and assist visitors, now we ha<ve 6 meeting rooms, all not very close to where I am and now when a client or visit stop by I cannot guide them to the respective meeting room, if coworkers tell me: XX please guide them to the meeting room and i be right there with them briefly,  because Im not supposed to leave my desk. The ones guiding them will  be the coworker they are going to meet if that will be the case I know

I feel like from now on i be slave to my desk, cant get up without askin gpermission first or ask for help from my coworkers and it could be that at anytime if i ask someone for help they can be busy too doing their own job.

The OP did not think  in advance or understand that I also need to get up and go to the copier machine or to the supplies room when I need to and those places are  now so away from my current new desk beause i dont have my own copier or even fax machine. It is a joint copier and fax machine for the whole company.

And today I even heard that they want to change my cuirrent works desk and put it outside the main door and put it in the company floor lobby, that means even farther from the places and things of the company.

The coworkers (in higher position) who decided how the front desk will be did not think at all of my comfort just their comfort and now everything is not even at hand for me.

Hi maru. I realize there are a lot of inconveniences there but you will eventually get used to them. With time you will work out a system of your own that works for you.

You will have lunch and break times too to do other things. I really feel it will get better with time.

At my job we cannot leave the kitchen unattended. For one hour a day I am left alone. It always seems that it is this one hour before the aide comes in to help that something is needed somewhere. I simply say that I cannot leave without coverage and as soon as I have it I will take care of it.

You will find that people will work with you.

Please do not get discouraged. You will do alright. Take care. MaryAnne

Welcome to my world - Maru,

Career receptionist speaking here. And to think that i chose this position so i could escape the office politics and the responsibility of being the Administrative Secretary for 3 managers and their various staffers!  But to each his own, i must admit.

Folks have called me crazy for accepting a position that limits my mobility. And yes i am "tethered" to my desk, yet i do have my own personal fax/copier machine at my desk. I also have scheduled bathroom breaks (2) at 15mins. each and it is during those times that i make all of my internal pit stops, deliveries and retrievals. And i have managed to come up with a fairly good system of prioritizing my work tasks so that i do not have to disturb others to come and sit-in for me @ the front desk.

When it comes to visitors, all of the employees understand that once i have informed them of a guest's arrival.. they must come and retrieve their own visitors. So it's really not a problem.

Good Luck and stay positive. And remember that the isolation of being the front desk receptionist is not for everyone. And it might not hurt to express to your boss, your desire to work a general desk job instead; within your company. Possibly if you give them a liberal amount of advance notice; they might be willing to accommodate your request.

It worked for me, just in the opposite circumstance.

Kitti
