I was laid off October 27, 2008. I'm a CPA with a couple of years of experience, but in Consulting. I've been using a combination of recruiting firms and searching for things on my own. I've had a couple dozen interviews over the last nearly 8 months. I've even gotten to the second round on 4 different jobs.

I understand your frustration Nicole. It seems like HR people everywhere have decided the best way to let someone know they didn't get the job is just to stop responding to them in any way, shape or form. I had one firm I got all the way to them checking my references and then *poof* just stopped responding to me. I timed it once, it literally takes less than a minute to type "The company has decided to pursue other candidates. Thank you for applying." and hit send.

My biggest pet peeves have become the phrase "looking for Big 4 experience" and perpetually coming in second for any job I apply for...

As of right now, I'm just trying hard to keep the faith, and my sanity.

How many people worked in your company?

IF it is over a certain amount of employees, you might be under a rule where you all were supposed to have been given ample notice that the company was closing -- in our state, it's 2 month's notice for a company with 100 employees or more.

Call your state dept of labor and check into that. Your company may have violated a state employment law.
