Hi everyone,

I am in an absolute panic and don't know what to do.

Long story short...I worked in Municipal Government for 6-7 years. My original supervisor left, I did the best I could on my own and eventually another person was hired. She was a real b***ch, although I saw what was happening, it didn't really register and I was eventually asked to either resign, or be fired. I chose to resign.

I live in a small town and getting an interview, let alone a job, has been extremely difficult. However, I just got a call from a local bank and I've been asked for an interview. I am nervous beyond belief and I have no idea what to say when they ask why I left my last employment.

The real reason I left is because I had been having a rough time, a bad divorce and my son in serious trouble with the law. I lost focus, and supervisor lost confidence in my abilities. And like I said, from the time she got there I think she was looking for a way to get rid of me. She used my lack of focus as the excuse.

Does anybody have any good ideas on how I could answer this question? I want this job so very badly...my money is just about gone and EI has refused my claim (which I've appealed, but I'd rather have a job than EI benefits!).

I appreciate any advice you might have for me....I could truly use it!

benska

Just an idea: but I have used thid the past: "Wanted a change of career for personal reasons." You have gone through a lot. Perhaps there was someone else you used to work with who could give you a personal reference. Then on the application where it says "Contact previous employer", you can always check "no". That gives you the chance to explain yourself at the interview. Best of luck. Lezza

Excuses I've used included:

Wanted to change careers

Needed to care for a terminal relative

Wanted to focus on school

There were no advancement opportunities and I desired greater challenges

I don't really think there's a perfect answer to the "why'd you leave your last job" question even if you are totally honest.  A potential employer is going to make whatever assumption they wish.  This is one of those questions that you answer quickly and steer the conversation back to your strengths and why they should want you.
