If you feel that the problem started after you installed any software recently, uninstall it.
There could be conflicts with software/ drivers which may be causing the problem.

Can you play these files on another player? If they do play then your computer should be ok. That would mean that the Windows program is not working... Before you try to fix your computer try uninstalling and downloading and reinstalling the latest version, here is a little info http://www.tech-faq.com/play-wmv-files.shtml

 

I rarely use Windows Media player so I opened it and checked it out and I have version 11..........suprise I thought I had v9....lol....

There is a v12 you might want to check it out...
