The British Courts have ruled that this woman is not smart enough to be a mom; her daughter is now up for adoption. The mother, identified as Rachel, has opted to take her case to the European Court of Human Rights.

According to this Daily Mail article,
"The adoption is going ahead despite a recent psychiatrist's report which declared that the 24-year-old has 'good literacy and numeracy and that her general intellectual abilities appear to be within the normal range'. "

Geez, if that were the standard in America then about 80 percent of U.S. kids would be up for adoption.

It's an interesting question though. Is it possible that someone could be intellectually unfit to raise children? What if a mother had Down's syndrome? (Assuming that's possible). It seems politically incorrect but I worry about a mother's problem solving skills and the safety of an infant.

From what I've read, there seems to be a lot more to this story than simple intelligence issues. The baby in question was in NICU for several months, and the hospital staff were able to observe the mother interact with her baby over that period of time. Obviously the full details aren't being made public, but IMO there is reason to believe that she is not in fact a fit mother.
