discussion title:
how the media describes crimes
I've been really annoyed lately, mostly because of the Polanski case. CNN, which is my main source of information, and other news and papers have been describing rape cases as sex.
I'm sure they have been doing it forever, but with all the sexual assaults going on lately, local and national, I've been paying more attention. I've written to both CNN and local & state newspapers because it is so disrespectful. If you were raped when you were 13, would you want the media telling everyone that your rapist had sex with you? The words the media choose to use are very meaningful because people can base their opinions by what they say.
Its like when you read about a case of incest. I always assume the worst, but i actually have heard people say "it was consensual so who cares", when i actually read more than just the headline and it was not.
I'm just venting because it really makes me angry. You'd think a journalist would have a dictionary handy.
