Fuel price rises prompt protests in U.K., France
Truckers bring Paris traffic to crawl; fisherman demonstrate in London
The Associated Press
updated 6:54 a.m. PT, Tues., June. 3, 2008

PARIS - Truckers and taxi drivers slowed traffic around Paris' business district to a crawl Tuesday in a protest over rising fuel prices, and hundreds of fishermen demonstrated in London to demand government help.

Dozens of trucks and taxis in Paris drove slowly toward and around the headquarters of oil giant Total SA in La Defense, site of the main financial district, to protest a new tax on heavily polluting vehicles.

Authorities said the operation snarled traffic on several highways.

Farmers elsewhere in France blocked ports and oil terminals as part of protests started by fishermen last month demanding government aid to help compensate for high fuel costs.

Fishermen in London
Fishermen from around the United Kingdom demonstrated in central London on Tuesday to demand their government's help in coping with soaring fuel prices.

Hundreds of fishermen gathered outside the London headquarters of the department responsible for food, seeking financial support for an industry they say is especially vulnerable to rising fuel costs.

Barrie Deas, chief executive of the National Federation of Fishermen's Organizations, said the cost of fuel for fishing boats was making it impossible for many in the industry to keep going.

"Boats are going out to sea and fish for five days in terrible conditions and we're not getting enough to even pay our crews," he said.

World oil prices have been climbing for months, and topped US$135 a barrel on May 22. They have since fallen slightly but remain at near-record levels.

They were in Manchester/Salford today (my area):

Bikers protest over fuel prices
Hundreds of motorbike riders protesting against high fuel prices have caused delays on motorways outside Manchester.

The "slow" protest, which includes some taxis and lorries, left Birch services just after 0800 BST on junction 18 of the M62, to head into the city centre.

Police used rolling-roadblocks to keep disruption to a minimum, but traffic backed up behind the convoy on the M60.

More 500 bikers on M602 and were greeted by applauding onlookers as they made their way through Salford.

In fact the second picture on that article was taken right across the street/canal from my apartment (they were very, very noisey):

Thanks for that info!  What else have you noticed from the recent rises in the price of fuel in the UK...or in Europe in general?  Any first hand observations that you'd be willing to share?

Not much apart from the protest, just people complaining.

What's interesting is that diesel is more popular over here than in the States and it was sold as the cheaper fuel option but now it's more expensive. So people are a bit annoyed about that too.

Diesel is now expensive here as well.  In fact, locally, it is the most expensive option.
