Hi there. I am very new to ivillage so please forgive me if this question has been aswered on here before... please humor me. :)
I'm 19 (going to be 20 this year) and have been married for 3 years with no kids. In the past year or so, I graduated college with an associates degree and begun ballet once a week. I eat very healthy, and work out 6 days a week (30 min. cardio and 30 min. strength training, and doing tonning exercises, alternating day to day from arms, legs, core, and back, not counting the stretching/yoga class I take once a week and the ballet class I take once a week, an hour each). My legs and arms are extremely muscular now, but I can NOT get a flat tummy! Its very frustraighting because I work it out 15 - 30 minutes at a time 3 -4 times a week. I do plank exercises, crunches on the ball, reverse crunches, T-stand, isometric (i hope I spelled that right) holds.. I just can't get this layer of fat to go away! Is there anything at all that I can do to make it go away? Should I work it out more with harder and longer periords of exercises? I'm not trying to lose weight (i'm 5'4 at 120lbs.) I just want a flater tummy. It feels like a layer of jellow over hard abs! lol. Thank you! -Tiffany

Well there are a few things to say. First, at 120 and 5'4" you are at a perfect weight, so you are probably unhappy with your body composition more than anything else. Is there fat anywhere else on your body? Chances are if your body fat is a bit higher than you would like the answer is in your diet, though it sounds like you're eating very well.

Second, if you have a little "tummy bulge" this could be caused by a couple things that come to mind immediately. One is a mild food allergy or delayed food sensitivity which can cause some bloating, water weight and excess fat. Try eliminating wheat, dairy and sugar for four weeks and see what happens. Very likely you'll see some noticeable changes. Even better, take out all grains plus dairy and sugar.

the second thing that might cause it is stress hormones. Cortisol, the main stress hormone, has been found to add abdominal fat even in slender women who are under a lot of stress. With a couple of kids, that could well be you. Try reducing stress by adding an extra hour of sleep, taking some time for meditation, or just taking better self-care. That could be the key to the whole thing

and don't worry so much about it. IT sounds like you're tremendously healthy and you're at a good weight. Be patient and keep experimenting with different things and you'll find the key.

warmly
