As I sit here, with sore muscles from simply mowing the lawn, I realize I need to do something.  I have allowed myself to get so out of shape and I am about 25#'s over weight.  I have some knee issues I have been dealing with and I know losing weight would help a lot.  I know being in shape would help me be healthier and feel better in general.  I have an elliptical, treadmill, and Olympic weight set with machines in my basement.  I can't make myself go do them.  I need more motivation.  I need to be accountable.  I need to do this for myself to feel better.  I am tired of being tired.  I am ready!

I am currently a single mother, because my husband is deployed to Iraq.  I have 3 boys, 16, 13, &, 10.  I work 2 ten hour shifts a week as a recovery room RN.  I have time to do this.  I need to do this.

So, questions.....Do you enjoy going?  Is it expensive?  Are you motivated to get there At least 3 times a week?  Can you go more than 3 times a week?  Any input is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!!

Hi and wlecome to the Curves Board. I am also a registered nurse as is my sister that you will see around here. I am disabled from rupturing a disc in my neck picking up a patient who fell. I had to have the disc removed and so I am on a permanent light duty disability.

I told you this because I have now been going to Curves for almost 1000 visits. I am in better shape than I have been in years and I am pretty typical of a nurse in my ability to take care of everybody else first and then forget about myself. Aren't we all like that!! I am notoriously bad about joining a gym and paying for a year's membership and not showing up after the first month!

I haven't checked lately but sometimes Curves has specials on for the initial fees. The monthly fee is usually $39-$44 dollars per month. If you go to a Curves Smart facility it is usually $5 more per month. My Curves is just a regular Curves without the Curves Smart system. It is recommended that you go three times per week but you can go more than that. I am an insulin dependent diabetic also and so I go 4-5 times per week.

Curves fits my life style. I can go afterwork on my way home and do my exercises and get it done in 30 minutes. Then I go home and eat my dinner. I have developed some close friendships with other women there. I am amazed at the number of nurses who belong to my local Curves.

I say, make an apppointment and see how you like it. You can usually try it for at least week to see if it works for you. If there is a Curves with Cruves Smart program I would go there but you won't be using that system until you have been to Cruves for a month. You have to get used to doing the circuit before you start on the Curves Smart.

Good Luck and let me know what you decide.

Hi! I've been going to Curves since March. This is the first gym I have ever joined. I go 5x a week and we recently got the Smart machines. I've got two small kids so the 30 min workout is perfect for me. I've lost a lot of inches and 14 lbs so far. When I joined there was a special so I didn't have to pay the registration fee. If money is an issue just wait for the next promotion. Also, once working out becomes part of your routine it becomes much easier to go.

I too am a nurse and I understand the importance of good physical health.  But that was not enough to get me into the gym on a regular basis before I joined Curves and Curves was not the first gym I joined.  So I thought I would answer your questions directly.

Do you enjoy going? YES!  Curves is different than any other gym I have ever been to before.

Is it expensive?  All gyms cost something;  In my area it costs less than the other gyms.

Are you motivated to get there At least 3 times a week?  I sat myself down and had a heart to heart talk with myself.  This talk went something like this...Self you are a valuable person and important to some people, you deserve this so look at this as a gift to yourself.  No one can take this gift away from you because you gave yourself this gift and you deserve it."  I have given this same talk to several new members of Curves over the last 6 1/2 yrs and each of them has said this is an interesting way to look at it.  I just got home from my morning exercise and a young mother of twins was there and she said this was her "adult time" where she did not have to talk 3 year old boy.  In the past I hurt my back and had to stay out for 10 weeks and I missed it terribly.

Can you go more than 3 times a week? Yes, you can go 5 or 6 days a week if you want to but you should mix it up with other exercise.  I'm not good at mixing it up, and so I go 4 days a week and try to walk or garden seriously the other 3 days of the week.

I hope this helps and I wish you good luck in your decision.

gentle hugs
