Would you give a gift certificate to Planned Parenthood?  What would you do if you received one?

INDIANAPOLIS - Christmas for many is the season of giving. At Planned Parenthood of Indiana, it's about giving the gift of health care and contraception.

The network of 35 health centers across Indiana has begun offering holiday gift certificates for basic health care services "or the recipient's choice of birth control method," it announced this week.

Nearly 800,000 Indiana residents don't have health insurance and can't afford basic health services such as Pap tests and breast exams, President and CEO Betty Cockrum said.

"This is about basic health care, and potentially lifesaving health care," Cockrum said.

Planned Parenthood's health centers perform nearly 1,000 Pap tests each week, and about 10 percent reveal findings that require follow-ups to more accurately detect or prevent cervical cancer, she said.

Well honestly with the cost of health care rising and the amount of people losing their jobs and benefits-I think this might be a good idea. I know if I had a sister, neice or daughter who needed services and couldn't afford it, I'd consider giving them a PP GC  or offer to cover basic costs at a dr. of their choice to make sure they got the birth control and other services they needed.

I think it's a great gift if you know someone in need of these services.

Your daughter is beautiful  : )

I wonder if someone would be offended by this gift?  It's not something you could give to just anyone, kwim?

{{raises hand}}

To answer your question about whether anyone would be offended, YES. I would be completely insulted by this! I do not have health insurance for myself. My children are covered. I have gotten rude comments from people about having too many children and somebody should talk my Dh into getting cut. I would find a gift certificate for birth control extremely offensive. As far as looking at it for a pap smear, I still don't like it. If someone knew my situation and wanted to discreetly offer to help me pay for an appointment, that would be one thing. IF someone wants to give this "gift", that is how it should be done. And it should be up to me to say thank you or no thank you, not to be stuck with the gift certificate. :o(
