I came across this on another board, and being the experienced (and lazy) CL I am, I pinched it. From The Dominion Post, in New Zealand:

The eco-pawprint of a pet dog is twice that of a 4.6-litre Land Cruiser driven 10,000 kilometres a year, researchers have found.

Victoria University professors Brenda and Robert Vale, architects who specialise in sustainable living, say pet owners should swap cats and dogs for creatures they can eat, such as chickens or rabbits, in their provocative new book Time to Eat the Dog: The Real Guide to Sustainable lLiving.

Save the planet: eat a dog?

I'm having trouble imagining 4 chickens clucking around my house instead of my cats. Think they'd get on the furniture? ;)

Right now my grey kitty is the signal animal telling me when my DH is not doing well after his surgery, I doubt any chick has that sensitivity.  I like chickens out in the pen scratching in the dirt and laying eggs....not in the house scratching on the rug and laying whatever.   Eat my cat and it will be the last thing you do..........

I heard that if you were to die in your home, your cat would eat you but your dog would not.  After you die, your cat no longer associates you with being his person you are just a food source. Your dog will never see you as a food source.  Thats why they always have stories of old people dying and having cat bites all over them.  Unless your dog is psycho or turns, they just dont see cases of that.

Also, I use my dogs as guard dogs.  You wouldnt want to try to come in univited, trust me.  I somehow doubt chickens would do much good.   Besides, the love you get from a dog, and occasionally a cat, outweighs their eco paw print, I dont care what anyone says!
