How are you guys protecting yourself against H1N1? I've been taking a lot of Vitamin C and washing my hands - all the time!! Fitness came out with this list of things to do that I found helpful. I'm not sure if I am going to get the shot, but I definitely am going to make an effort to get more sleep - lately I have not been getting very much at all!!

- Suds up. Wash hands often with soap and warm water.
- Stand apart. Spend limited time in crowded areas.
- Sleep plentifully. Get seven to nine hours nightly to help maintain immune function.
- Spot the symptoms. Fever, lethargy, coughing and lack of appetite, and possibly runny nose, sore throat, nausea, and diarrhea, are all warning signs.
- Speak up. Ask your doctor about antiviral drugs Tamiflu or Relenza (about 70 to 90 percent effective at preventing the flu) or the H1N1 vaccine, once it's approved and available, especially if you are pregnant, a healthcare worker, or caring for an infant, or if you have other health conditions that increase risk.

Welcome to your board!  Here is the link for all of the latest information on H1N1 http://www.cdc.gov/H1N1FLU/

The vaccine is approved, but the supply is still in short supply.

To add to your list I would stress that you need to keep your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth.  That is how all of these viruses gain access to your body and when you touch these areas you just rub these viruses into these nice warm moist area.  I know from personal experience that this is easier said than done, but try to keep your hands in your pockets.

gentle hugs (no handshakes allowed) and sneese only in your elbow

I'm disturbed by this post by greencravers for a few reasons.

First, the H1N1 virus is a legitimate threat to young children for complicated reasons totally unrelated to vitamin D. Second, suggesting that children should spend almost an hour in the sun without sunscreen on a daily basis is just reckless. Sunscreen blocks the UV radiation that can mutate DNA.

Vitamin D is a generic term. It's true that vitamin D3 can be obtained through sunlight as a result of (this is enormously simplified) 7-dehydrocholesterol in your skin absorbing certain UV light. The result is cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) which is inactive and requires further sequences of specific events involving the liver and kidneys..... Anyway, vitamin D is fat soluble so extra can be stored rather than eliminated. It's also readily avaliable in numerous dairy products, different types of fish, eggs, and it is absorbed through the gut.

Ema- those are great tips :) People in my office are sniffling like crazy. I have been washing my hands, using Purell and drinking lots of water. In addition to your tips, I recommend checking out the anti-viral tissues that Kleenex makes- once you use them they kill the cold and flu bug so others can't catch your stuff!
