I posted this on the Fitness and Health board, but I think Losing Weight fits what I am trying to do more. How is everyone doing?

I'm hoping that by posting here it will increase my motivation to do it this time. I am almost 29 years old and have watched the scale creep up slowly for a while, then in the last year it jumped 15 pounds! I'm not sure why, but I think it is sneaky extra calories and I think I have gotten lazier. I am 5'8 and 210 pounds. I am officially fat. My goal is to get back down to 190, a weight I am comfortable with and feel attractive at. The difficult thing is that I am also trying to get pregnant, so this is a long term commitment. We can't try for another month and a half due to my husband's business trip, so I am going to use that time to get a little healthier so I can have a healthy pregnancy. It'll have to be done slowly because I don't want to mess of my cycle by crash dieting. Here's what I'm going to do:

-Keep a food journal, estimating calories to stay between 1500 - 1800.
- Track my weight on physicsdiet.com
- Gym 3xs a week, 20 minutes eliptical machine, 20 minutes weights
- Walk/ hike 2-3 times a week while the weather is good

Hope it works! Has anyone had some motivating success at weight loss?

Hi and welcome to the board.  I think you are smart trying to get healthier while you are waiting to try.  The healthier you are when you get pregnant the better it will be.

What you are planning to do looks good.  Post anytime.  Ask questions, jump in, and let us know how you are doing!

Good luck!

You made a really good decision trying to lose weight before conceiving. Not only will it increase your chances of getting pregnant, but women who start pregnancy at a healthy weight are giving themselves far better odds for an easy and uneventful pregnancy and birth. If you do get pregnant before you're at your target weight, it would probably be wise to ask your doctor for ideas on how to keep yourself active and eating well.

I think 1800 calories a day is a bit higher than what you should be consuming if you're not exercising that day. One of the hardest parts about losing weight is finding the right balance of exercise and diet, so that you're not overconsuming and you're also not starving yourself. Your basal metabolic rate at 5'8", 210, and 29 years old is 1752 calories. That's how many your body burns in a day with no exercise (based on the average person's metabolism). 1500 calories may be a good target intake for you on days you don't exercise, at that rate you would see an average loss of about 2lbs a week.

I hate to say it but I would also suggest more cardio. 20 minutes, three days a week is not much. It isn't nothing, though - this may be a good place for you to start and get yourself into a routine, but eventually you're going to want to do 30 minutes a day 5 days a week in order to see results that mirror your diet changes. I understand this is a pain in the butt but serious weight loss is a real challenge. You can definitely do it. Even if you start with small changes, it's how big your COMMITMENT is that will determine your success. And you have some good reasons to make that commitment to yourself right now!

Good luck on everything!! We'll be here for you :)

Thanks for the support and the advice! I decided to start slow with the excercise bit beacuse I hate excercising and in the past found that I would find excuses for not going to the gym and eventually just stop all together. If I do it in small manageable pieces then I think I will be able to get through it and be less likely to give up. What I really need to work on is the eating part. Thanks for the advice about the calories. I was using an online calorie estimator and it said up to 2300, but that seemed way to high. I don't think I eat 2300 most days and I have been gaining weight. I'll try to keep it around 1500.

Today I have been conscious of what I am eating, but I am officially starting tomorrow with a nice long hike and a trip to the farmers market.
