Sorry y'all.  I'm sick as a dog and am still in this online training class so I didn't have much time to look for fitness fun facts but I thought this stuff about marathon statistics in 2007 was interesting.  On marathonguide.com you can get information like this for each year.  Women's participation has remained pretty steady over the last several years but you wouldn't know it by the number of women here who are getting out there and doing it!  :-)

Interesting stats.  But, while the percent of women finishing has held steady in comparison to total, the total has increased by 30% from 2000-2007.  It looks like equal number of men and women are entering the sport so that's great.
