Pitcairn Lions Run For Sight 5K
I ran the Lions Run for Sight 5K this morning. I wasn't sure if I was going to do it or not, but when I woke up and checked the weather, I decided to go for it. I usually pre-register so this was a new experience for me. I got my directions from their website and we headed out. We were less than a mile from our destination when we were stopped because a race was coming through. I was LIVID - thinking the site must have been wrong. I called my sister and asked her to check the site. Then, I tried calling the race director but I didn't get an answer. We were in the process of turning around and going home, when I said that maybe we should just go. If nothing else, I was planning to complain about their website being incorrect.
When we got to the race start and saw runners milling around, I realized that the race we passed must have been put on by someone else. Glad we didn't turn around. I got my registration filled out, paid, picked up my race bag and shirt and hit the bathrooms. I usually warm up quite a bit before a 5K but it was pretty chilly and I was unfamiliar with the area, so I just did some dynamic stretching and jumped around a bit.
The start was pretty quick. There were about 100 runners, I believe. I had talked to a few people about the course and found out that it was a out and back with uphill out and downhill coming back, so I knew I should pace myself in the beginning to ensure a negative split.
My first mile was in 8:15 which is a slooooooow first mile for me. It was a steady uphill going out and at 1.25 miles, we hit a huge hill. The turnaround spot was at the top of the hill. I had scoped out some of the runners ahead of time and I saw one of the girls in my age group right behind me when we did the turnaround. I hit 2 miles at 17:05. The last mile was mostly downhill so it was my fastest mile:) I finished in 25:10.
There was tons of food after the race, including a full lunch with Ham BBQ and deli sandwiches. I wasn't hungry enough to eat lunch though so I just had a banana and cheese with PB crackers. The kids pigged out though and were all crazy and hopped up on sugar because Nick let them have some Eat 'n Park smiley face cookies.
I placed first in my age group of 30-39 and got a cool trophy. All in all, I felt like I ran a good race. Negative splits are what I have been working hard on so I am glad I was able to achieve that:)
Thanks for reading. Pics will be on Facebook at some point.
