Thank you for contacting us with your question about the use of
Slim-Fast products by persons with type 2 diabetes.
Slim-Fast products are nutritional foods that can be incorporated into a
diabetic meal plan. And by losing weight, a person with diabetes can
improve blood sugar levels and help decrease the risk of complications
such as heart disease or kidney disease. However, persons with diabetes
should consult a physician before following The Slim-Fast Plan or any
other diet plan so their individual needs can be addressed. It is
important that a physician closely monitor blood glucose levels and
medication while following a weight loss program, as medication needs
may decrease.
Persons with diabetes need carbohydrates to help stabilize their blood
sugars and provide energy. Carbohydrates provide our bodies with
energy. Sugars, starches and fiber are all carbohydrates. Carbohydrates
are broken down to sugar in the body.
According to The American Diabetes Association, a person with diabetes
who is trying to lose weight should consume an average of 45 grams of
carbohydrates at each meal time and 15-20 grams at each snack. The
Slim-Fast Optima Meals (shakes, bars) contain ~25 grams of total
carbohydrates per serving. When combined with a piece of fruit or other
carbohydrate serving it equals the recommended amount by The American
Dietetic Association and The American Diabetes Association.
Therefore, by choosing a Slim-Fast Meal, the carbohydrate intake is
controlled and the calories reduced as well. Slim-Fast counts the
calories for you- while keeping your carbs within the recommended range.
Snacks should include carbohydrates as well. Slim-Fast snack bars,
fruit, a fat free yogurt or 1/2 of a peanut butter sandwich are great
snack choices to enjoy in between meals.
Please note that if you are interested in using our Meals and Snacks for
use as part of a Low Carb Diet that they do not meet the current
guidelines for a diabetic meal as recommended by the American Diabetes
Association. These products may not provide the necessary
carbohydrates. A physician can recommend which products are most
appropriate.
