I quit my gym 6 months ago for the lack of time (or so I say) - kids, their clubs and social life, FT job leave me wiped out. I feel though that I need some exercise and have thought about 'joining' my DH's basement gym :) . It's basically just a bench with tons of weight. I wonder if doing strength training there would be enough. Does anyone have any experience working out at home? What do you do, how often, what routine? Thanks!

I have a home gym and really enjoy using it.  I do have cardio equipment which makes it easier to get a total workout.  If you think you're serious about using a home gym I would highly suggest investing in a piece of cardio equipment that you really enjoy using.  In the meantime, do you have a television in the room or can you move a portable one in there with a VCR or DVD player.  I would take a trip to the library and rent a lot of different workout videos.  There are a lot of really good ones and you can get a very good workout.  Do you have cable tv?  Fit tv has lots to choose from and you can tape them and do them when you can.

I have a very basic home gym in the corner of my home office and I love it.  I have a weight bench, a variety of weights, a ball, some stretchy bands and a recumbent bike.  After a lot of research, this was the bike I picked:  http://www.amazon.com/Schwinn-231-Recumbent-Exercise-Bike/dp/B000MXL5SQ/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1257291636&sr=8-6  DH and I both use it.

Lately though, the most important piece of equipment in my home gym is my computer.  I have been really enjoying my workout videos, especially the Leslie Sansone Walk at Home DVDs.  This is my current favorite:  http://www.amazon.com/Leslie-Sansone-Mile-Weight-Loss/dp/B000RL21OA/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1257291811&sr=1-8

I also ocassionally use the free workout videos on Sparkpeople.com and that is a good place to get ideas for using the hand weights too.

I used to go to a super fancy gym but I enjoy working out at home much more.

I may look for that Leslie Sansone video; thanks!  I checked out a couple of her basic ones from the library recently, and enjoyed them.  My knees haven't been cooperating too much lately, so I was looking for some lower impact things to do, thus the video.

My home gym consists of 2 kettlebells, 2 resistance bands, a pullup bar, and a TRX.

I have a stability ball but I haven't used it for years.
