I'm very lactose intol--I am unable to eat cheese, sour cream and you can forget about milk and ice cream. I do use the lactose free milk & margine. They are both great.

I want to learn how to sub my milk for things like recipes that call for canned milk--how would I do that?

You can get tablets to drop into fluid milk products that will break down and eliminate the lactose and make it possible for you to use it.  They are called Lactaid and can be found in most pharmacists and well supplied grocery stores.  Use that in the canned milk you want to use in your recipes.

In Sweden they say that you can eat cheese so long it is true feta ( sheepmilk cheese) or hard goatcheese or long aged  ( 6 months minimum ) cowmilk cheese.

I use in pancakes and some creamed soups coconuts milk.

In Sweden we have lots of lactose free milk products, I don't know how it is in America.

But you can use  soymilk or rice dreams instead of cowmilk, some lactose intolerant can drink goatmilk.

So try
