Green Grocery Shopping on a Budget
Intro

Intro
by Erin Walsh

Want to green your grocery cart, but think organic foods are out of your price range? Think again. If you pick and choose your spots and know how to shop smart, you can make healthy purchases that are good for you and your wallet.

Sally Fallon, author of the best-selling cookbook Nourishing Traditions and founding president of the Weston A. Price Foundation, shares some easy, budget-friendly tips on where to shop, how to navigate the aisles, and what's important to buy organic (and what's not).

I'd love an NT board here at iVillage. I had already been familiar with some of Fallon's eating concepts, but talking with someone who was actually doing it was a boon to looking and FINDING resources locally I never knew existed!

There is an entire subculture out there--even here in the boondocks--of folks eating healthier! I'd never have believed I'd find a scoby right here!!!

I recall several on this board tooting about Trader Joe's.  I finally found one here in Raleigh, and got a chance to go a couple days ago.

Let me tell you...I was not impressed.

First of all, I don't usually buy the organic food products because I don't personally see the value, and I am on tight purse strings.

When I can buy a gallon of skim milk for $2.15 at Costco, I don't see any reason for buying organic milk for $6.00 a gallon.

We went through the isles two times because they were crowded, and we both left the store empty-handed.  Actually, I didn't see anyone loaded up in their carts--just a couple items.

I still find Aldis having the most values.  I understand that Trader Joe's and Aldi's are both related by brothers.  I asked a worker at Trader Joe's.
