Hello all,

I have gotten good advice on other iVillage forums, so I'm trying my luck here as well!

I will be moving in about a month (actually to another country) and would like to give goodbye gifts to the special people in my life. I have been going through a divorce and a few people have been very supportive and helpful, and I will miss them.
- My ex-in-laws who have been very good to me. I know, this is strange. My mother in law is retiring soon...they aren't terribly active but do like to go for walks and bike rides in the region, work in their garden.
- My 2 bosses with whom I have a very close relationship. One is a woman, older...the other is a man, father of three, 40-ish.
- Friends - a couple who has just bought a new home, are doing some minor renovations, like to travel, to eat good food and drink good wine, pretty active.

I know it's hard for you to suggest things if you don't know the recipient, but I was wondering if anyone could just steer me in the right direction. I usually like to give consumables as gifts (chocolate, wine, etc), but this time I want something a bit more meaningful and long-lasting. Not too pricey but not cheap either.

Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Nice plants, consider even repotting them in a nice pot that will last. That's what I'd do for the ex-in laws and the friends who moved.

For your two bosses...if they won't kill the plants, that would work as well. Otherwise is there any nice office-type thing they could use for their desk?

Melissa

I have a friend who likes to bike and hike and I found a book on local areas to do that (found at local bookstore).

I like the idea of a tree or outdoor plant for the new homeowners.

For the bosses, if you know anything about their interests, a book -- either a novel or a non-fiction that might be on a subject in which they are interested.

When people are tough to buy for, I generally give them food and beverage type gifts. I gave to someone the largest bottle of Dewars one Christmas. I knew he liked Dewars and he is a guy who has everything. I gave another lady a lot of gourmet coffees, for another gift once. If you notice these people wearing something regularly, that is a good idea too. There was another lady, who wore fresh water pearls all the time, not incredibly expensive, but it made a nice gift. I recognized the scent someone's favourite perfume once and told my friend to get her son's teacher a bottle of the fragrance. You can also give items that everyone needs. Some sort of small appliance or soaps and lotions. And there is always good ole' American Express Gift cards!

My sister is going thru something similar...but she already lives in another country, Germany. She is also very close to her soon to be ex-inlaws...she invited them over for a big, formal Thanksgiving dinner, something they don't celebrate there, of course. Then a few nice photos, pick the best and give it to them in a frame.(them and you)
The friends: I would put together a nice homemade gift basket.
The bosses: Prolly just a nice card, and maybe a small gift, Barnes and Noble has nice little desk accessories. Conversely, when I left my job years ago to be a SAHM, my boss gave me a lovely letter opener from the Museum of Modern Art. I still use it (18 yrs. later), love it, and have never seen another like it.
Curiosity is one of my downfalls, what country are you moving to? Good luck!
