My mother in law sent me a card congratulating me on an acheivement. What is the appropriate response? I like her, but I've only met her twice so we aren't close or anything. We also live far apart. Should I call and thank her? Send a thank you note? I'm clueless about this sort of thing. Thanks in advance!

You don't typically send a thank you for a card.  Next time you speak with her on the phone, or when DH calls to talk to her, just pop in, say you received the card and appreciated it.  If you're comfortable enough to call her on your own, give her a quick call to say thank you.

Hi,first of all, congratulations on whatever your achievement is!
I've never been one to believe in sending a card after another card, but in this particular case, I would probably send a handwritten note.

I'd say give her a call and thank her for the card. Let her know you appreciate her thoughtfulness. A note for a card starts getting very circular. "Thanks for the card MIL, it was sweet of you to think of me. So, how are you doing?" It's a nice opportunity to get to know her a little bit better.
