Seattle voteres said no to a 20 cent tax on shopping bags. How would you have voted?

Personally I would have voted against it.

I think I might have voted for it, even though I'm against ever-increasing taxes.  In my town, most grocery stores offer money back for using your own bags, but I rarely see anyone doing it besides the shoppers at Whole Foods.  People need more of a push to wean themselves off the plastic.

Terri - that is a good point too. But ultimately some will not care about the charge per bag and it still would not change theri ways.

It reminds me of when I was young and Cokes came in glass bottles. You were charged a "deposit" and then when you returned it to the store you got your deposit back. Some people could not be bothered to take a bottle back to the store for 10 cents and would just throw it in the trash (or worse on the side of the road). I am thinking it was 10 cents per bottle (this was in the 70's). My mom used to let me keep any money for bottles that we turned in and I used to always be on the lookout for bottles and I would find a lot, so I could earn a decent amount or a young kid turning in the bottles each week.
