Creating built-up moulding allows you to create any profile you wish by simply combining several existing standard moulding styles.

  1. Once you've decided on the profile you like, determine which moulding should be installed first and used as your base moulding.

  2. Start in the first corner and measure the length needed for your first base piece, and cut the moulding to length.

  3. Nail this first board into position and make a mitered cut for the return piece that will be fitting into the corner (figure A).

  4. With a coping saw, cut along the moulding's profile (figure B) so you'll have a good clean fitting corner.

  5. Locate and mark the wall studs and then drill pilot holes in the moulding for every other stud. If possible, drill holes in an area that will be covered by subsequent moulding layers.

  6. Nail the base piece into position, and recess the nails with a nail set so you won't dent the wood.

  7. Continue drilling and nailing the pre-finished moulding in this manner until all the base-level moulding is up.

  8. Take the pieces that were left over from your miter cuts and glue them into the ends of any exposed board to give the moulding a more finished look (figure C).

  9. Cut and nail crown moulding onto the top of the base moulding, and then glue finished returns in place to cap off each end.

  10. Caulk any gaps between layers (figure D) and paint as desired.

Your built-up moulding will add a unique and personal touch to your home, and by combining standard moulding pieces you can create any look you desire
