Hard to believe it even though I know it works that way normally....BUT..... only about 3 weeks ago i was finally getting some cherry/grape tomatoes sorta regularly but none of the allegedly big ones(i say that cuz everything is in pots and most this year seem smaller than normal)....

BUT today I picked 7 large tomatoes and 6-12 cherry/grape ones. Yesterday it was 2 big ones.   I brought a bunch to office today, and am guessing that next week I will bring in another bunch.

What I love is these are not just your generic....early girl, beefsteak, roma, etc etc etc.

I have Green Zebra, Garden peach, Elberta(which i call a red zebra), Carolina Gold, Granny smith(green ones) and a bunch of others!   Lets face it, if you happen to find a golden or orange tomato in the store the price is obscene and flavor is nothing to sneeze at!!  It is really fun seeing the looks on coworkers faces when i show them the odd ones...and they are amazed it is all from my pot garden(pots in my driveway!!). Also given my mobility is really down right now, so getting around is more challenging, it is so neat I can still do this!! I think this year is turning into the best since I moved here crop wise!

That is awesome, congratulations on your tomatoes!!! you planted a really cool varity of fruits. Can you share what the flavors of each of these beauties is like? I'd love to add some more exotic varity to my tomatoes next year. I have golden cherry toms and they are great :) the larger 'globe' I have are boring, early girl & beefsteak, but hey, they're still better than store bought 'maters LOL :)

Isn't it fun to share home grown produce with others? I love that about gardening most of all I think :)

I can tell you the garden peach which is not small enough to be considered a cherry is quite sweet and amazingly the skin is a little more like a peach than any other tomato.  It also has a little thicker skin.

Another plant that I dearly love and can be found around here, but it might be hard to find....... is ground cherries.  No they are not the same as tomatillos.   They grow on what is really like a bushy plant rather than growing up like tomato plants do.  Here is a picture of one.  the one thing is they are very small and it would probably take a lot of plants to get enough to cook with but mine never last that long.  I usually eat any I find!!

I really did laugh out loud at your "pot garden". I think it is so great that your pots are all doing so well this year.

Our summer has been cooler than normal and we are just now getting a good amount of tomatoes. I want to try the Granny smith ones, but how do you know they are ripe?

We had some really yummy Lemon Boys last year, but this year the lemon Biys never set any fruit. odd since my other plants did well/

Andrea, any of the heirloom varieties will give a diferent flavor than the hybrids. I took some of mine to one of the older ladies at my church and she said that they tasted like "old-fashioned" tomatoes. Some are sweet, like Black Krim (a personal favorite), and others are more acidic. Our favorite cherry tomato this year is the CHocolate Cherry with the Yellow pear a close second.

If you look at http://www.totallytomato.com/sp.asp?c=69 and select the size tomato you want then select heirloom-open pollinated you can see a good variety of heirlooms and some of the descriptions give an idea of the taste.

This site also has some good flavor descriptions (thier seed prices might be bit more though): http://www.tomatofest.com/heirloom_tomato_seed_store.html

My advice would be to try 1 or 2 or 10. lol Trying different tomatoes can become addicting! Next year my son (who is 10) and I are only going to grow heirloom tomatoes and try to stick with other heirlooms where we can. The flavor is just so much better than the hybrids. :)
