Planting for Winter Interest?

Since I grow mostly annuals and vegetables, my garden looks pretty bare during the winter months. But I do fill a couple large pots on my patio with branches and greens just for some winter interest. I am wondering what the rest of you northerners do or plant or grow for winter interest in your yard and garden?

I would love to add some winter interest, but I am not sure where to start. I planted a couple bushes that my local nursery recommended, but they did not make it through the summer. They were supposed to have reddish branches in the winter. sigh

We do have some evergreens trees and bushes, but we need more!

well i will say there are a lot of maple leaves(which are pretty but quite big.  This fall I am just not up to raking them but am debating on having the dudes that mow the lawn come back and rake the front lawn. the back is not a problem. There also tend to be lots of bunnies, squirrels and chippies!! So in the winter we have the winter olympics when there are tracks all over the snow!!
