My kitchen is painted a very light cream and a deep teal. Finding either shade in oven mitts, towels, hot pads etc is just not happening. Do you all think it'll look okay if I use black as a contrasting color?

I have a similar problem --- a deep teal kitchen! Impossible to match so don't even try. I mean, to repaint the kitchen to cover nicks, scuffs and nail holes left by the previous owner, we had to have the color custom mixed just to come close as there wasn't a single paint chip we found that matched! And we weren't prepared to change the color since the custom valences and the edging on the laminate counters were matched to the teal, and we weren't prepared to make such major changes...!
I resorted to items (a piece of framed stitchery, a sea glass and wire wreath, an afghan, sea cushions on the bar stools) in shades of blue, purple and green to accessorize our creamy white and light oak furniture (we turned the eat-in part into a sitting room as we don't have a breakfast table) and resorted to cream towels, etc. --- not trying to match the teal works! You can see the afghan and the stitchery in this photo, along with our cream-colored furniture (and our cat tree! LOL):
So sure, go with the black if you like, or pick an altogether NEW color to work with; your cream really is a neutral and doesn't figure into the equation (unless you decide to accent with cream that is)...
ugh that is a color... my teal in my kitchen is an even deeper, brighter teal than yours. I'd thought of using a light green, as our friend who's staying with us always says it's green, although my female eyes tell me it's teal lol I actually really like the teal and the faux finish on the cabinets. Thankfully I have a light wood floor, white counter tops so when we decide the cabinets need refinished, refaced it won't be as difficult as yours. hm maybe black is the direction I'll go. My partner won't like it all that much, but of course that's if he even notices it- the kitchen is *my* room :D

Yeah, the problem with teal is if you bring in green, the teal loks blue and if you bring in blue, the teal looks green! Kind of makes matching impossible.
And when you try to match paint colors to fabric colors you almost HAVE to do the matching in the year that color is "IN" in fabric (match the paint to the fabric, not the other way around) because colors tend to go in and out of fashion so fast... That's probably why realtors and stagers push neutrals so much!
I think black, especially if you bring in your cream aas well, will look really really classy!
And like you said, odds are your partner won't even notice!
Well, Carol already gave you some great ideas. A teal kitchen is kind of a hard color to work with. Have you ever thought of black and turquoise with the teal?
Now don't look at the floor in this kitchen, but see how nice turquoise/black looks with teal green, even with touches of green and blue, (see the bottles):
Maybe you can find some kitchen area rugs with teal green and a few other colors in it to use for color inspiration and pull the other colors from it in accessories?
