How can I showcase my unique ceiling?

I just bought a new home and it has a unique octagon ceiling in the dining area. I haven't seen one quite like it before. It's kind of vaulted in that one area. It's almost dome like. I don't really know how to describe it. It's like if you cut off the top of The Octagon (a building in Roosevelt Island, New York that was once an insane asylum) and molded my ceiling around it. It's a hole in the ceiling that goes six or more feet up. The hole is an octagon and then it gradually goes smaller until you're at the highest point of the ceiling. The chandelier hangs from the middle of a octagon ceiling shape thats about 2 times bigger than a stop sign. I almost didn't even notice it until my final walk through. I think It's kind of a neat detail and I know if i almost missed it other people will. I know this is a completely confusing mess of an explanation but I need advice. How do I make it stand out?

Welcome kjane82!

Congrats on the new home! Lucky you to have such a great feature in your DR.

Well, there are several ways to accent your ceiling. Since I have no idea what type, color and style your DR furniture is and wall color, I will just have to give you several links of photos, accenting octagon ceilings.  More info would be great!

Installing decorative crown molding is one way and paint is another. Using a ceiling medallion around you chandelier and crown molding is always nice. Another way is to hire a artist to paint a mural on that part of the ceiling that you like. Not sure how much you want to spend doing this.

Here ya go! Look through all these links and see what appeals to you:

Decorative tin tile is another way: https://www.americantinceilings.com/estore/media/large/3-ssg-300.jpg

I have even seen mirrors installed on ceilings. Guess this is good for avery modern DR to make it look bigger:

Just depends on what appeals to you to fit the style of YOUR DR.

Do you have wood flooring or carpet? If wood, I would get a large octagon area rug for under your table with colors in it to match your DR or wall color and to accent the ceiling more. Make sure it's big enough so when you pull your chairs out they are still on the area rug.

Well, now you have lots and lots of food for thought. Let us know what you think and it would be so great if you girls would fill out your profiles so we can get to know you better. ;o)

Of course we LOVE to see picture here, if you can share some.

Doris, as usual, you and are are in agreement!

One more possiblity though --- we have an octagonal-shaped trey ceiling in or dining room and the pervious owners, who carpeted the dining room (WHITE carpet in a dining room, AACK!) customized the carpet by paralleling the octagonal outline in the carpet with a forest green band! And that pattern on the floor does draw attention to the ceiling... If the floors are wood or tile, then you could put a pattern in there as well... inlay a different color wood or add a band of decorative tiles or...

You're very welcome kjane!

I would say your life is pretty interesting with 3 little ones running around all day. I bet they keep you hopping! Enjoy every minute as they grow so fast. I have 3 kids too, 2 girls and a boy, but now all grown and they blessed me with 3 grandkids.

So you live in Utah! It's a beautiful state. Why, we are neighbors, I live in northwestern AZ near the Grand Canyon and Vegas.

I use to have my nails done every month for 20 years, while I was working. That's a very interesting trade! My best friend is a hair stylist.

Thanks ever so much for filling out your profile. I sure wish more would do this as I consider this board part of my extended family.

Best of luck with the ceiling and please come back and let us know what you decide or just jump in anytime with us.
