I saw on the news this morning that beginning November 1st Target will begin offering 5 cents back for each reusable shopping bag they use when you come in to shop.

CVS customers who shop on four occasions and don't ask for a plastic will get a $1 cash bonus on their CVS loyalty card.

These companies join Trader Joes and Whole Foods in an attempt to cut back on plastic bag use.

Do you use reusable shopping bags?  And the ultimiate question is, how do you remember to take them to the store when you go?

Your reply could be used in an upcoming iVillage slide show.

Top Foods, Safeway, Fred Meyer, QFC and Albertsons all offer the fabric bags now. One city adjacent to mine is going to require stores to quit using plastic bags and charge for paper.

I have maybe 20 (???)now...not enough for the once every three months shopping I do and I keep them in the car. (I admit I have run in to a store and forgotten to take them along anyway!) I also have four of the insulated freezer bags....I need lots more of those.

While one side of me likes the idea of the fabric bags, another part of me thinks of all the ways I reuse the plastic and paper bags and resents not having those available to me. (Well, the paper WILL be and I can always hit a Costco for bags, too.)

It's quite a controversial topic out here....mandatory purchase of the bags to take your groceries home in and some folks are saying they'll just cross over into another city and shop there rather than be forced to buy the bags.

Yes, I have been using reusable shopping bags for several years.  I live right next door to a Super Wal-Mart (really..) and I have several different kinds. Some are from other stores, even. I always ask the person in line behind me if they would like a free bag, Sometimes they say yes, sometimes they say no. If they say yes, I just buy another one. ($1) Best dollar i try to spend every week. If we all helped each other just that little bit, I sincerely believe the world would be a better place. Also, I keep several bags in my car, and  also next to my dog's food in the cabinet. My little shih tzu, Leo, knows i would never forget to see if he needs food!! My husband likes the fact that we make wayyy fewer trips from the car with the groceries!!

I use fabric bags from Home Depot, when shopping there.  I hang it with my purse.  But I do not use them at grocery stores.  Besides, I would much rather shop at Home Depot, Lowes or Menards than grocery shopping!!

I do not use them when grocery shopping because of the bacteria possibilities.  If I have to wash them after each use, then I am using more water, detergent, etc, besides the fact that they would wear out too fast.  If I have certain foods put in a plastic bag before my reusable bag, then what's the point?

I read a long time ago, that the bags need to be washed, as you do your lunch box/container with food in it, after each use.  I think if I were to reuse grocery bags I would have to opt out for the mesh kind, clean them and hang them to dry.  But, not very likely to do that.

Thanks for that comment.....aside from when meat packages leak, I haven't been washing them all out. It frankly just didn't occur to me, but I'll be mindful of it now!
