We just bought a house and the bathrooms are straight out of the 50s.  Literally, the house was built in the 50s and everything in there is original.  The home inspector basically told us that the tile in the bathroom is in mint condition and cemented in so not to remove them.  But I have heard that you can glaze them to change the color.  We are eventually going to replace the sink and toilet, both of which we can do with the help of my BIL but I want to read up on all of the options out there.

So I am looking for a DIY book on bathroom remodeling.  Does anyone here know of any good ones out there?  Amazon has a ton, but I don't want to just randomly pick one.

Thanks

I don't think I've read a single DIY book on remodeling --- with DH coming from a contracting family (his Dad was a general contractor/carpenter, DH put his way through college painting houses professionally, and he has two brothers in the roofing business) and one of his best friends in the contracting business we tend to rely on expert advice a little closer to home.

Painting original tile is possible --- not necessarily a simple procedure, but when done right, effective.

Here are some online tips and tricks...

http://www.askthebuilder.com/651_Painting_Ceramic_Tile.shtml
http://www.thenewhomemaker.com/how-to-paint-tile

BUT... as all of these articles imply, it will NOT last in areas where the tile will be wet a lot, like bathrooms.

Reglazing, which is effective, can be done yourself but might best be done by a professional:

like those people who also reglaze/refinish bathtubs and sinks:

Sorry to rain on your parade... but I think you'd be better off talking to a professional service.
