I live in Australia and have been successfully tracing my English ancestry long-distance for a number of years.  I have written an article condensing what I have learned during this time, as a help to beginners in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the former British colonies in Africa (or anywhere else in the world) who want to start tracing their English ancestors but are daunted by the distance.  Here is the article if you would like to read it:

If any of this helps I'd love to hear from you!

Great article for people who are just starting out. But I have to point out that it's a little patronizing to say "did you know England does not have States?" I can't imagine most Americans not knowing that England doesn't have States so to me, it's just kind of patronizing which will alienate your readers.

Didn't mean to sound patronising ukgirl82, so I'm sorry it came across that way.

Australia has states, so do Canada and the USA, and it's possible some people in those countries might not understand that the next step down from the national government is a county, and that counties are the jurisdictions responsible for registration of life events.  That was the point I was trying to make.

Anyway, I'm glad you thought some of the tips were OK for people starting out in genealogy.

Thank you for posting this, we all need as refresher course, no matter how long we've been doing genealogy.

Perfect for the new to the hunt too!   :o)
