Hi there,

I posted on the board last winter as I was just starting out in genealogy; however, due to some family health problems my genealogy interest got put on hold until now. I guess I'm just looking for some tips on research and organization.

So far I have most of my family group records and general information going back to two great grandparents for both myself and D, including extended family. I have an accoridian file (soon to be two lol) with family group records stored along with the obituaries and such. I've been using colored paper clips as a coding system for families and I just purchased the Legacy software which I'm currently filling in. I have made out a list of information I still need on the people I have so far, most of which I probale can get from family members.

Do you trust dates from birth certificates over what people recall...I have one case where EVERYONE says that a person was born in April but the Death index indicates he was born in June. He was only three when he passed away.

How helpful are social security numbers?

Can you reccomend a site or book that has information on military research?

How do you go about getting information from The Masons? I have a long line of members on my mothers side, but I'm not positive what lodge they belonged to.

Also I saw this book online and wanted to know if anyone here has read it or could reccomend another one, it was called "The everything guide to online genealogy" by Kimberly Powell?

Thank you!

My Freemason ancestors lived in Pittsburgh and Reading so I went to the PA Grand Lodge website and found this: http://www.pagrandlodge.org/genealogy/index.html
I just followed the instructions on there. So I would visit the Grand Lodge of the state they lived in and hopefully they'll have some info about how to request genealogical records.

These may help also:
