I already have an entourage of critters but I'm afraid it's going to get bigger.  I have 4 dogs (Kuma, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, and Eddie), 4 fish (Rojo, Fancy, Black, Velvet), 2 cats (Cotton-Eyed Joe and Kenny), and 2 hermit crabs(Sam and Francis).  My intentions soon are to add at least 3 more hermit crabs and a small tank of glofish which I am very excited about.  However, I have turtle envy.  Specifically box and wood turtles and tortoises.  It's going to be a long time before they grace my home and yard so I have plenty of time to do my homework and decide what is best for me and what I can have here.   I probably appear to be a collector or hoarder but I am well aware that I have met my limits with the cats and dogs.  The cats will be leaving when my 3rd son moves out (I hope) because they are his cats.  I'm aware that it doesn't always happen, but he's 15 now so we'll see.  I think the fish (and hermits when they are active) are better than tv.  I so love watching them.  I feel the same about turtles and tortoises.  They are so fun.  I should also add that I have 5 sons and they are a zoo all by themselves!  They are 17, 16, 15, 8, and 6.  They help when I make them.  The 2 little ones are best at it.  Ds6 hates animals but he deals with it.  Ds17 is required to either work or volunteer as part of his school so he volunteers at the humane society.  He hates it.  I told one of his friends that our house is a humane society!  I meant it in a good way.  So that about covers my house.  I'll look forward to getting to know people here.

Welcome to the board, Tina! I think when there's a house full of kids, there's always a house full of pets, too, lol. We also have four dogs and a tank full of fish and growing up as a kid, my family did have quite a collection of pets. Only one cat and one dog, but countless critters like frogs, turtles, fish, mice, hamsters, guinea pigs, a rabbit, etc.

Kerri is our turtle expert, but I just wanted to say hi and to let you know that you're right at home here with a house full of pets!

hiya tina! welcome to the board. you have a full house! i just love the names of your pets. i have 1 cat, 7 box turtles, 1 tortoise, and a frog. i'm glad that you've decided to wait and research owning turtles. there's many things you'll need to consider, from habitats to environment to legality. my best advice to you is to read A LOT of books about the species you're interested in. you'd be surprised how many people think that a box turtle is very easy to care for. they have very specific needs. a tortoise's needs are more specific. if you have any questions feel free to ask. :-)
