ok my moms washer stinks! it is not a mouldy musty smell, i cant even describe what it smells like. ive smelled lots of things from nasty dogs to stinky diapers and horrid drain stinks but this is undescribalble.

its also depositing brown ( not black like mold ) spots on her clothes.  the clothes do not smell after washing in the washer, but the washer stinks all the time. the stink has been around for a while, but she didnt notice it. i guess i did because i dont live here and it hits me like a ton of bricks when i enter the back porch.   the spots just started a week or so ago.

i know its not mold like a lot of washers get, and all the info i find online is to get rid of mold.  its not motor oil, been there done that.  not mold, been there done that too.  she uses powdered detergent, no softner, and has dogs.  frequently washes on hot settings.

anyone know whats up or what to do?  shes ready to just buy a new washer, and hey.. if shes got the $ i dont blame her.

Good to see you again Inked Mom what type of washing machine is it, top-loader/HE? and where does the water drain into = could there be any link up to any other drains?

From the sound of all the other things she does it shouldn't be the mold problem you hear so much about so am wondering if it is a drain problem?

If it's not a drain problem this product might be helpful http://www.smellywasher.com

Anyone else had a similar problem?

I did find this information but it is more on the mildew front but am posting as it might be worth a try

One good solution to help your odor problem...it works well...in a top loader I recommend 2 cups of cascade and 2 cups of bleach, fill your machine with hot water and let it agitate. At the end of the agitation/wash cycle, let the machine sit and soak for about 10-15 minutes to work on your scum, then close the lid and let it complete. Next load run whites to be safe all bleach is out. This should help.
On some really bad odor problems, you may have to remove the inner basket to scrap off the build up from the inside of the outer tank. You may will need
special tools to remove the inner basket.
Fabric softener is also nasty for building up inside and under the agitator
It is recommended to use half to a quarter of the detergent that the package  recommends.

Another option here http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/397607/how_to_clean_your_toploading_washing.html

Have you explored the idea that it might be to do with the drain affecting the machine?

I'll try to do my best Sherlock Holmes, here . . . First off, whatever is causing the smell isn't necessarily the same thing that's causing the black marks.  Seems like there's a good chance that it's the same thing, but it's not a necessary conclusion.  So let's take them one at a time, starting with the smell (though the same analysis will apply to the black marks#.

Whatever is causing the smell has to be #a# something that's part of the washer; or #b# something that's been introduced to the washer, which could be either #i# something that's growing in the washer like mould or mildew, or #ii# something that is introduced to the washer each time your mom uses it; or #c# a combination of #a# and #b#.

If you've eliminated oil or grease used to lubricate the washer, that would seem to eliminate everything that fits into category #a#, at least that I can think of.  So that leaves #b# or #c#.  I can't think of what combination of internal and external causes would create the smell you're describing, and, frankly, this category seems like a long shot to begin with, so that leaves us with category #b#.  Either you've got some kind of mysterious mould or mildew that you're not familiar with, or your mom is putting something in the washer that's causing the smell.  My best guesses as to what the later might be are that something is wrong with the detergent she's using, or she's washing something that makes everything else smell #e.g., oily/greasy clothing like a car mechanic might have), or there's something in the pipes that provide water to the washer.

Hopefully this gives you some food for thought.
