Need advice on how to actually save money on a Disability Social Security check.  I get less than $1000/month, and only 48 years old. Even with any increases I may get for cost of living it doesn't even come close to keeping up with real cost of living. Probably is a question no one can answer, just frustrated and don't know where to turn.

Hugs to you, I know it can be frustrating and disappointing at time. What you need to do is write down all your bills, categorize them in what is a necessity and what's an extra. If you have any extras such as cable tv, eating out, you can try to cut those expenses and what you save put into savings. Another option is living quarters, don't know if you are buying a home or renting, maybe find a place that offers less expense to maintain, maybe even finding a roommate to help out with expenses. I wish you well in trying to budget in saving, it's not easy at times, and does bring challenges, when their is a way their is always a will. Keep up posted.

How frustrating for you!  Is there anything that you can do to help make you a little bit of extra money?  i don't know what your disability is, but if you are able to sit at a computer, I'm sure there are opportunities out there to make some extra cash.

Good Luck!

Sarah

Stoonsarah, you are not alone.  I'm in the same position and I know how hard it is to pay for necessities, much less save any money.  I don't have any tips for you that haven't already been mentioned, but keep your chin up - you never know what the future holds.  We must keep our faith, and keep pursuing whatever avenues out there that may bring us back to a position of earning money.  Be creative in your thinking ... good things will happen for you if your mind says it's so!

I wish I had some advice for you.  I'm in the same boat, receiving SSD and I'm only 46.  It was so much easier when DH was working but since he can no longer work, he's applying for SSD now, it's even tougher.  If you haven't already, I would suggest you go to Family Services and apply for food stamps, medicaid and anything else that you qualify for.  I know that has really helped us.
