HOLY COW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went to double-check my bank account balance so as to pay my credit card on-line that is due on Wednesday of course.

All of a sudden I see "Welcome to US Bank"  -- and get to read this

"On Friday, October 30, 2009, ******, Chicago, IL was closed by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. Subsequently, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) was named Receiver. No advance notice is given to the public when a financial institution is closed."

It wasn't as if US Bank *bought* our bank -- NOPE -- the FDIC took it over!

I just checked the account over the weekend as a matter of fact.     I don't know if I can make an electronic transfer now or not.

My kids have their passport savings bank accounts there too, etc...   It sounds like it's going to re-open as US Bank anyway -- which might be OK, we have a branch close to us anyway.    I think I'm going to change banks though.   DH has been using a bank now for his business stuff & frankly I really like the service there.    I have liked the service at my bank too but this one is closer, etc...   I suppose it's a chance I take with any bank but just seems like this is as good of reason as any to change banks.    I never did before because we have had an account at the original bank since we were married & it *had* changed names/closed the branch that was really close to us in the past but NEVER had the FDIC taking it over.   We just stuck with them.

Wow, that must have been a little scary.  Thank God your funds were insured!

Holy cow - what an enormous shock!  I hope they get things rolling soon and that you aren't inconvenienced too much.

I think I came here & posted in complete total shock when I opened up the home page & that was sitting there!!!

My bank gives rewards for their debit cards when used as a CC -- so I have about 3,000 points sitting there -- I'm *this* close to a $25 Target GC.    I hope what I charged recently counts & then I will cash those babies out ASAP.

I had been saving them for our next vacation but umm...not going to take the chance on that one.   I know I have enough points, they just haven't been credited yet to the account.

It's probably because our bank wasn't one that got the government handouts!   It wasn't just *our* bank either...there is a list of about 5 or 6 different ones that basically the FDIC handed over to US Bank.    I don't know if it was all the same company using different names but it was a fairly local bank as I don't think they had branches outside the Chicago area.

Basically, we can keep doing business as usual until we get letters telling us otherwise.   It does say their may be glitches though in the system as they move over (great!  *JUST* what I don't need.   The CC that is due on Wed. is the one I was late on by a day before so it's astronomical for it's fees already!   I don't need a second ding for something beyond my control at this point!)   If I weren't on-line, I wouldn't have a clue until I got a notice.    This is why I always tell my mom at this point, I don't think computers/internet is a luxury item anymore for the younger generations -- it's practically a need (*definitely* a need if you have school-aged kids around here -- they don't even hand out progress reports for the High School kids anymore since they tell you -- you can look up their grades on-line, so we aren't going to be mailing anything home!).

That is crazy! I just switched from USBank to First National Bank about a month ago (I got my purse stolen and dealing with the USBank fraud department was a nightmare so I decided to switch).

Keep us posted on what happens!
