I am so ticked off it is NOT funny.   I  misguidedly went to Target tonite and bought  a Wii  console in large part because I realized I had $300 put aside which was more than enough to pay for it and also take advantage of their buy 2 games and get a 3rd free.

So I get to checkout. I write a check for the full amount since there is way more than enough in my checking account!!   Gee whiz, the idiots started using a new system TODAY for approving checks.  MY CHECK is declined!!  I was not thinking and put it on my charge account NOT crappy red card from there, but my MC.  Am sure since I have not charged anything on the Target card they would decide to decline that too, and I am DANGED if I will pay them that obscene interest rate they charge!  If it had not shook me up so much I would have basically told them to keep all that I  was buying since they obviously do not want my money!  the supervisor at the store that came over said it was a new system, he was not sure what was going on but HE had already had at least 6 people whose checks were refused just today!!

They did tell me to call the 800 number on the back of check and they could explain why my check was declined.  I DID!!!  Apparently since I buy my medications there and pay cash(What a sin!!) I do not have a track record there, and in their infinite wisdom they will NOT ALLOW any checks to go through unless they have a record of your having cashed checks there under $50 on a regular basis!!  I told them at the store and I told the guy who explained since my money is no good that they will probably lose my medication business.  Since if I have to get all my meds filled at the same time.....it will definitely run over that. So I also RUN the risk of money being refused  and being told I cannot get my medication!

I really like and respect their pharmacists but I am going to warn them this latest stupid move on their part could result in people being denied needed medications!!!  Not everyone has credit cards. I guess I could have gone and tried to get the money out of their high priced ATM but I should not have been treated that way!!

Lets put it this way once my insurance covers the rest I am sure they get several thousand dollars from me every year in prescriptions, and given at least one of the medical conditions odds are good that will go much higher in the future.

They are alleging that bcause I do not normally write checks there all the time...I have no check history!! I have written checks there just not on a major regular basis.  I have lived in this city and those doofuses have had my business for about the last TEN YEARS!!   My budget is planned so I take a certain amount of money out once a week and when it is gone.

I am getting more and more cranky over this!!! I may end up going back tomorrow with the  whole purchase and tell them I want my CC credited immediately  and after that I will take my handy little scissors out and cut up my great little RED CARD from them and tell them to keep it.

I admit this is the same stupid business that could have messed up my buying my house last fall because they gave me a TARGET Red card with a 23% interest rate and a $400 limit! The TV I bought was almost that much, and I admit I just opened the card to get the 10% off, but still they offended me then, and this last incident offends me a lot more!!

Bizarre. I go to Target but always use my debit card. I haven't written a check at a store in years. Perhaps this is their way of discouraging the whole "check" writing thing which is weird to me since writing a check IS money in their pocket...

Sorry you had a bad experience.

Sorry you had to go through all that. I had something similiar happen at Lowe's when I was buying carpet a few years ago but it had to do w/ Visa rather than the actual store. It kept declining my debit card~first it scared me because I wouldn't have gone into Lowe's and spent almost 2grand on carpet if I was even close to what was in there and then it ticked me off. We tried a few times to run it through. Anyway, I called the bank the next day (I was one of MANY). They said their server couldn't handle X amount of traffic and so it bounced anything out over $500 or something. But it was a hassle!! Anyway, seeing how that happened several times in just one night, I suspect that they will fix the issue. It will make alot of people angry. I would send corporate a letter. It sounds like it was out of the managers hands and that he tried to be helpful. I worked at Walmart years ago and the machine would always, always decline a specific bank card from a specific bank. I don't know why but it just would. People would be royally ticked off!

I live in Canada. Debit cards are king here most people don't write checks or have cash. I know you guys write a lot more checks in the states so I can see how that would hurt them.

Two weeks ago, I let my customers know I would not be accepting checks anymore. I don't think I will lose any business because of it. I have had few bounce and the only way for me to get my money back is to go to that person and ask for it that bounced it. The truth is, if they bounced a check they don't have the money in the first place. It was just pissing me off. So some of my good customers that have never bounced a check suffer that inconvenience now. Oh well, I am NOT a bank. People need to realize that if the money is not in their bank to so a debit withdrawl you will get declined. It is not my job to float that money for you for days on end. The whole thing makes me really mad so I stopped accepting them. Not many retailers in Canada will even take a check, I was probably one of the last in this area.

Anyway back to your situation. I laughed when you said you take out your scissors and cut up the card. Do it! Return the stuff and get your money back. Then go to the bank, get some cash and get your Wi at super walmart!! They were rude to you. However, I do see accepting less checks from a retailing perspective as the wave of the future.

I am leery of using the debit card setup simply because with a check, i have the duplicate check to show what I wrote a check for. I do NOT use many checks at all and since I often use an electric cart there due to mobility issues writing a check is a real pain in the you know what!!  Either be a pretzel trying to write check on their high counter or write it on a very unsolid surface!!  I have already been getting cranky over their cheapness in regards to the carts. they have only FOUR and 1 does not get a decent charge so even when it says its fully charged it will die or come close to dying just driving to the other side of front end to trade carts. One other (perkiest of the bunch) will keep giving me electric shocks when I touch metal, and then they recently redesigned the cart area to make access to the carts much more difficult.  They also will not get any new carts. I did call pharmacy and am getting a printout of my purchases for last 2 years and I gave her a heads up. I warned her she may get really upset customers whose checks get refused when they try to pick up needed meds!  She said oh no, if checks written over $50 are a problem there will be lots of unhappy customers.
