Argh. This is a vent. BUT it turned out well so I guess its a good thing!

Two years ago I had the gas fireplace checked because it wasn't working properly. The technician who came in said the glass was warped and the coil was coroded and not holding a charge. He said the cost to repair would run $1200 - $1500 so I should look into getting a new one. He shut of the gas line so really my fireplace has been a useless decoration for two years.

So I have been working on figuring out how much the upcoming bills and maintenance for the house would be and got an estimate for a new fireplace. $4000!!! Egads!! I was so annoyed.

Fast forward. Today I had the furnace tune up done. I asked the tech how I would go about getting an exact quote for a repair on the fireplace (figured he was here anyways). I showed him the work report from the last guy and he promptly told me the last guy is no longer working there. He looked over my fireplace and said that there was no warped glass and the coil is still working, just not as well as it could. He took the fireplace model down and said that when the coil died, just call and they will order the part and install it . . . for $300!!!! The best part? He thinks I can easily get another winter out of the coil!!!

It pays to get a second opinion!!!! Yay!

I am envious! I would love a gas fire place. I'm glad you can use yours without repairs.

It never hurts to ask. That is good news as that will be nice at Christmas time.

BF and I are looking at a wood burning fireplace as we live rurally and could cut down wood and we both love it. It make your house insurance higher but it would be worth it.

We have a wood burning stove that's beautiful in our den downstairs.  We also have over 3 cords of wood cut and stacked in the woods behind our house.  Three years ago the family had the upper part of the farm logged.  There are tree tops glalore all over the place.  Good wood like oak, hickory and poplar.  When we need wood, all we have to do in drive the tractor or truck up in the woods and load up.  They don't cut much in the warm months.  Too many snakes and bees.  But the cold winter months are great for cutting.  One caution, we do have a bobcat that likes to hang out, so I a little cautious about take the Jack Russell when we go up the tractor road.

Bex, it does ALWAYS pay to get a second opinion.  After posting about a dental estimate I have, I got good advise from someone, ???Roybn maybe, to get a second opinion.  I definately will.  I'm so glad you got good news.

I would LOVE to have a wood fireplace in the house. The pessimist in me always thinks that it would be great to have incase of emergencies (the gas would do me a big fat nothing if the power went out!!!). I am thinking if I decide to stay here long term I will investigate putting a wood stove in the basement. As it stands now things are so up in the air with BF's job situation that I have no idea where I'll be in a year or two. All I can do it keep plugging away at the debt so when the time comes I am in a better place to make an informed decision!
