Hi ladies!  I am 41 years old, and 14 weeks pregnant.  Just got a call from my doc that based on my bloodwork, my odds of Downs is 1:19, and it's freaking me out.  Baby's nuchal screen was normal (2.4mm) and my Papp-A levels were also normal (1.1 MoM) but my HCG levels were 2.1 MoM, which is what I think gave the high odds.  Any one else in a similar circumstance?  Planning an amnio in a couple weeks, but I am terrified.   Warm wishes to all, Julie

congrats on your pregnancy.  I don't know about the numbers or stats.   I didn't get a prenatal diagnosis but I did get a baby with DS.  I know there are a lot of false positives with the odds and the tests.   I wish you the best and an outcome you want.

I just want to tell you that is the worst possible scenerio that you are probably imaginging now, a baby with DS.  Is NOT the end of the world.  My Esther is our light.  She is the youngest of my 7 and she is amazing.  I wouldn't change her or her diagnosis for the world.  Her brothers and sister adore her.  She is naughty, funny and in her terrible twos.  She is just a baby.   The bottom line is they are just babies, very very special babies.

Who knows if perhaps you were made queen for just such a time as this? Esther 4:14

Your numbers actually sound good to me.  I had a very low papp-a (.27) and my odds were said to be about 1/20.  Just try to be calm and patient until the results of the amnio.  If you can afford it I highly recommend paying for the FISH expedited results.  BTW, I ended up with a genetically normal little girl.  Good luck!

Here is a website that I found helpful to wander around, check out his archives:

(and isn't Esther adorable?)
