Hi,

I'm posting my question here because I read somewhere that a link may exist between low body temp and food allergies.

So far, m 16-month-old DD is allergic to milk, tree pollen, and dust mites. We are also testing for other things at the next visit because she's still having reactions. We still need to test for soy, rice, wheat, and some other things.

We're pretty much a food dye free at our house and we avoid a lot of preservatives. I'm allergic to BHT, BHA, sodium benzoate, and calcium disodium EDTA.

So here's my current question: My DD woke up two weeks ago crying weakly. When I got to her room, her eyes were sort of staring off in the distance, she was very cold, and breathing very slowly as well as using her abdominal muscles to breathe. She had a cold, so I thought she was congested. Temp at the time was 92.9 (rectally).

I nursed her and wrapped her up in a warm blanket. She finally perked up as she got warmer.

She wakes up every night and has been doing that for a long time. Now, when she wakes up, I take her temp, and it's extremely low. It's between 92-94. In the evenings, it's between 97-99.

I use two thermometers...one under arm and one rectally. I know to subtract a degree rectally and add a degree under arm. The numbers I've given here are raw (haven't subtracted).

The doc ordered blood tests and advised me to get a new thermometer. I did and it reads even lower than the other two.

Any ideas why she might be getting so cold? Has anyone experienced this? Her room is 70, she sleeps in warm pjs, and I have a warm blanket on her bed as a sheet.

Thanks!

CJ

My 5 YO DD has FA, environmental allergies and is allergic to most antibiotics, has febrile seizures...  Her temp is often in the 94-96 range when she is sleeping and/or awake and it was 94.6 recently at the pediatricians.  We live in a warm climate and it was in the mid 90s that day.

My 2 YO DD Also wakes several times in the night, both girls will have low temps and are very sensitive the heat and cold. Now that she talks my two year old almost always asks to eat in the middle of the night when she wakes up, we have always nursed when she wakes up, still are nursing 3x+ a day.  She is tiny, but will sometimes have 2-3 helpings at dinner and as we are putting her to bed ask to eat again. Both of my girls have unusual responses to Motrin & Tylenol in my opinion.  IE temp goes up two degrees within 10 minutes of being given Motrin or it takes an hour for Tylenol to kick in then it only lasts for two hours.  Most times when my girls have fevers I have to alternate the Motrin & Tylenol every three hours. We are dye free and avoid most preservatives too as my older DD had problems with them.

My late MIL had many allergies and my DH said that she would often have a "reverse fever" when she was sick.  He said that instead of her temp going up it would go down.  I would be interested in learning more about the link.  A few times I have wondered if her febrile seizures could be related to her allergies, but everyone I mention that to says no.  Almost all of her seizures were within 24 hours of being close to an allergen.  Sorry I'm not more help.   Please let us know what you find out.

It's interesting that your daughter says she's hungry because my daughter also wants to nurse when she wakes up. I always nurse her because I think it will "warm her up." She's so insistent about it.

I don't have the results of the blood work yet, but I'll keep you posted.

It took me a long time to figure out that I was allergic to preservatives in food, so I'm guessing that sorting this out will also be a pain in the neck!
