I'm not sure that anyone can help me, but I thought I'd ask. Up until now, we were happily using Smart Balance as a butter substitute in cooking and Fleishmann's margarine in baking. However, DD may also have a soy allergy, so using either of those in her food is out. I looked into the dairy-free, soy-free version of Earth Balance, but it uses pea protein-- DS #2 is allergic to peanuts and used to react to peas by consistently spitting them up (no other symptoms, negative on the skin test). Our allergy doc told us to avoid all legumes other than green beans and soy (which DS #2 does just fine with) just in case, so it seems that the Earth Balance would be out for him.

Is there anything out there that is dairy-free, soy-free, and legume-free (and egg and wheat-free, though I don't think that wheat and eggs are a problem in butter/margarine substitutes)? I'm probably asking for the moon here, but it would be nice not to have one other thing to deal with when cooking. I would love it if we could all eat the same thing. TIA.

Here are a few suggestions:

Spectrum shortening - palm oil and can be used for baking.  Some grocery stores carry it in the baking aisle.  http://www.spectrumorganics.com/index.php?id=87

Fleischmann's Light, tub with light blue lid, corn based - can't bake with it but can be used for toast etc.  (It's very hard to find.  I have heard that Kroger's carries it.)

Mother's Margarine Passover version - cottonseed oil based.  It's only sold at Passover; so if you find it, stock up for the year.  (It freezes well.)  (I have never found these, but I live in an area with a small Jewish population.  You will need to find a Kosher store or see if your local grocery store can order them.)

Mother's Olive Oil spray does not contain soy.  You probably need to find a Kosher store for these products.

Is your DD allergic to soy lecithin/soy oil also?  Most (but not 100%) of SA kids can handle soy lecithin and soy oil.  Check with your allergist and see if you keep those or not.  Your life will be much easier with those than if you have to eliminate them.

If you can keep soy lecithin & oil, then you can keep the Fleischmann's and Smart Balance.

HTH!

Anne

I don't know if it's peanut safe, but the only other milk/soy free margarine out there that I don't see listed above is Blue Bonnet LIGHT (it has soy listed, but the only soy is lethacin & oil, so it should be safe). It says on the box that it's not recommended for baking, but I've been using it for awhile now and the only thing that it hasn't been successful in are things like pie crusts that require a lot of fat. What's best about it? It's cheep and sold everywhere!
